Spending considerable time at the stove, stirring constantly to achieve that perfect golden brown, is not always feasible, especially for busy individuals. That’s why I’ve created this easy caramelized onions recipe. By using an Instant Pot or pressure cooker, you can caramelize onions quickly and hands-off. This method yields perfect caramelized onions every time, making it a convenient option for meal prep or adding depth of flavour to your dishes without the hassle.
Easy Caramelized Onions Recipe
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 30-40 minutes
Serves: 4-6 depending on the dish you are adding this to
Ingredients:
- 4 large brown or red onions, sliced
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Preparation:
- Start by slicing 4 large brown or red onions.
- First, add a tablespoon of coconut oil to the Instant Pot or pressure cooker
- Next, place the sliced onions into the instant pot, close the lid and pressure cook on high for 20 minutes. In pressure cooker cook on high for 3 whistles
- After the pressure releases naturally, open the Instant Pot or pressure cooker.
- If you notice any browning at the bottom, don’t worry. This browning is due to the caramelization process. Stir the onions to incorporate the browned bits, enhancing the caramel colour.
- If there is still some liquid left, switch to sauté mode for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally and reduce the liquid to your desired consistency.
Additional Tips:
- Browning: If there’s a lot of browning, it adds to the rich flavour of the onions. Therefore, make sure to stir well to evenly distribute the caramelized bits.
- Liquid Reduction: Use the sauté mode to reduce excess liquid, achieving the perfect consistency for your caramelized onions.
Once ready the caramelized onions are ready to be used in a variety of dishes.
