Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 bottle (300g) of your favorite store-bought salsa (choose mild, medium, or spicy)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh coriander (cilantro) leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Spring onions (scallions), thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • Wholesome bread or buns (to serve)

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  2. Then, melt a tablespoon of butter in the pan.
  3. Pour the entire bottle of salsa into the skillet, and season it with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  4.  Use a spoon to create four small wells in the salsa.
  5. Next, gently crack open 4 eggs, one into each well, spacing them evenly.
  6. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the eggs cook for about 5-7 minutes, ensuring the whites set while the yolks remain slightly runny. If you prefer well-done eggs, cook them a bit longer.
  7. Sprinkle additional salt and pepper over the eggs before removing the skillet from the heat.
  8.  Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and spring onions, then serve the shakshuka directly from the skillet, family-style.
  9. Finally, don’t forget to have some wholesome bread or buns on the side for dipping!
