Sambharam | Spiced Buttermilk Recipe
Lets find out how to make the refreshing Sambaram, a traditional Keralite buttermilk drink perfect for hot and humid days.
Ingredients
- 1 green chili, crushed
- 1/2 inch piece of ginger, crushed
- 1 sprig of curry leaves
- 1 tender lime leaf (optional, but recommended for authentic taste) or lemon zest (if lime leaves are unavailable)
- 1 cup plain pre-made buttermilk or 1/2 cup yogurt + 2 cups cool water
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
- First, crush the green chili, curry leaves, lime leaves and ginger together Note: If you don’t have lime leaves, you can use lemon zest for a slightly different flavor, but I recommend using lime leaves for the most authentic taste.
- If you have plain pre-made buttermilk, simply combine it with the herb mixture and add salt to taste. Stir well to ensure that the flavors blend together.
- Alternatively, if you’re using yogurt, blend 1/2 cup of yogurt with 2 cups of cool water until you achieve a thin buttermilk consistency without any lumps. Then, mix in the herb mixture and add salt to taste.
- Serve the Sambaram immediately , or refrigerate it and serve it chilled.
